Chris and Hans attended the Napa Valley Barrel Auction with Don Brandenburger and BCV Associate David Whitfield on Friday, June 6 at Charles Krug. The auction benefits Napa Valley Vintners, which funds long-term initiatives to address the needs of Napa Valley residents and workers, including healthcare and worker housing.
100 wineries produced special barrels, typically of Cabernet and Cabernet blends which were available for attendees to taste and bid on. This year, for the first time, bidding could be done through a mobile app. Bidding was also done through the traditional bidding board. The board with its 10 slats of wood with the highest price at the top and the lowest at the bottom – to be replaced by the next highest bidder – the low wood slat crashing into a bin below.
By the end of the day, we had probably tasted less than a quarter of the amazing wines being offered and had successfully bid on cases from Cakebread, Hewitt and the Barrelhead bid (the top bid) for Chris’ wedding wine from Mt. Veder.
