Longtime Northern California chef and restaurateur Donna Scala passed away earlier this week at her home in Napa. A celebrated member of our region’s culinary scene, Donna was recognized as a dynamic chef with an infectious personality. Two of her most well known restaurants — Bistro Don Giovanni and Scala’s Bistro, adjacent to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel — have become institutions in Napa Valley and San Francisco. I was fortunate enough to work with Donna in designing Scala’s Bistro and always admired her dedication to the thoughtful preparation of vibrant dishes that brought the best out of seasonal ingredients. She will be greatly missed.
